I was reading the well loved classic mysteries of Sherlock Holmes, written by A. Conan Doyle, and a question came to mind. What is Dr.Watson's first name?! I've read so many of the Sherlock Holmes books and I never once saw the first name of the doctor. Did the writer give him a first name, or does he just have a sur name?
If he doesn't have a first name, I would give him the name....Gresham. Gresham Watson. I like that.

Since most of the answers gave the same response, I am obliged to put this question up to vote. Thank you all who answered, and now I know. Dr.Watson's name is John, unfortunatly not Gresham. :) *grin*

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dr. John H. Watson is a fictional character, the sidekick of Sherlock Holmes, the fictional 19th century detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, in the Sherlock Holmes novels. Various (extra-canonical) sources give Watson's birth date as August 7, 1852 and his full name as Dr. John Hamish Watson.

Sayers on Holmes collects the writings of Dorothy L. Sayers on the subject of Sherlock Holmes. In "Sherlock Holmes and His Influence," Sayers examines how the Sherlock Holmes stories affected the genre of detective fiction. In "The Dates in 'The Red-Headed League'" she discusses the contradictory dates in the Holmes story. In -- Oxford or Cambridge -- and speculates on a birth year for Holmes. "Dr. Watson's Christian Name" represents an effort by Sayers to solve the problem that Watson is called by different first names in different Holmesian stories. "Dr. Watson, Widower," is concerned with the speculation on Dr. Watson's possible multiple marriages. In addition, published here for the first time is the script she wrote for a radio production, "A Tribute to Sherlock Holmes on the Occasion of his 100th Birthday," in which the young Lord Peter Wimsey consults Sherlock Holmes.

According to Wikipedia, "Various (extra-canonical) sources give Watson's birth date as August 7, 1852 and his full name as Dr. John Hamish Watson." But this indicates that the name was not in the original works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. So it's probable that he was never given that name in the author's own works, but perhaps by others that used his chracters, or his son, whom I believe continued his work in some fashion.

According to "Encyclopedia Sherlockiana" by Matthew E. Bunson, Watson's full name is John Hamish Watson, and he was born sometime in the early 1850s (according to Sherlockian W. S. Baring-Gould, it was on August 7, 1852).

His name was John, although I think in one or two stories he might have been James. And Holmes never really said "It's elementary, my dear Watson".
