I'd like to buy a home in Texas that isn't too far from Dallas Proper. Where is the best place to live, with great schools, and still lower cost of housing??

First of all people Texas doesn't suck! I grew up in Dallas but I moved away. Dallas is very very crowded and full of crime. Try to live just outside Dallas if this is what you really want. Farmers Branch, Plano, Arlington, there's a ton of places and different cities. I think Ft Worth is probably a little better though. Good luck!

If you HAVE to live in Dallas (so sorry), then you want to live outside of the Metroplex onthe same side of the city that you work. For example, if you work in North Dallas, consider McKinney, Allen, or even Garland. If you work in West Dallas, then Grapevine or Coppell.

If you have never lived in Dallas (or Texas) then you may be surprised on how such a large metropolitan area has such little to offer a thinking person. Unless you like malls, chain restaurants, big a?? SUVs, shallow people, and a treeless landscape.

Definitely avoid South Dallas. To live near Downtown Dallas and be safe and in good schools it will cost you a lot of money. Highland Park is one of the nicest areas near downtown. Otherwise there are plenty of nice suburbs that are more affordable. Plano and Allen offer really great schools.

I've lived all over the metroplex from dtown Dallas to Fort Worth and I also work in the real estate business. For quick answer I recommend Lewisville, Flower Mound or Grapevine.. These are nice medium size towns with great terrain and you're close to Dallas and have more than one highway to choose from when you go to downtown Dallas.
