The other day I received a totally blank email. No sender's address, no recipient address, no visible content, no attachments.
My anti-virus software found no virus. Playing safe I deleted it without opening it. Did I do the right thing and how is this possible?

Someone may be testing email address to see which ones bounce, with the plan of sending spam to them later (or selling the list to spammer).

Yeah you did the right thing, or could also report it as spam.

I've been getting a lot of those too, in my Yahoo! Mail, in Thunderbird, etc. I'm not sure what the deal is with those...but you are definately not alone on this one.
