What you're really asking is, "how many CUBIC feet are there in cubic yard?" Since a yard is 3 feet long and all sides of the cube in question are 1 yard long, you have to multiply height by width by depth.

So convert the yard into feet and it =3 feet.

3 feet high times 3 feet wide = 3 x 3 = 9

3 feet deep times 9 = 27 cubic feet.

Clear?
