Have we decided as a culture that monogamy is an ideal because of moral/religious influences, or do you believe it is part of our human hardwiring to seek and be mated to only one partner in a lifetime?

Neither. It is necessary to maintain civilization. Otherwise, anarchy.

Plus, look at it this way: The prime directive of women is security. To achieve that, a committed man is required. Therefore women created civilization because monogomy is, for men, learned behavior.

Oh, wait.... I forgot that in modern America (thanks to 40 years of hijacked Feminism) women no longer need a man, men are now an option.

never mind.

Its a societal construction developed for a number of reasons. The most recent one was the industrial revolution which could could not flourish without a stable societal system. A society rampant with irresponsible sexual activity and needy illegitimate children could not support the regimentation required by assembly lines and schedules. Also, since female sexual capacity is virtually unlimited and males are subject to the limits of physical endurance society decided that the female libido had to be controlled or the men would never be able to go out hunting for the daily kill or go to work at the office.

You might find this strange, but polygamy is a minority practice throughtout the world. Many cultures practice polygamy, polyandry and other forms of marriages that are older than recorded history. Evenin western countries, whiler strict monogamy might be the norm for many people, others practice serial monogamy, that is, marry & divorce & marry & divorce...
The various forms of marriage are part of being human, not any one marriage practice.

We are one of the very few known species which are monogamous...and I am not fully convinced that its a human trait, but rather something that is instilled in us from day one.

so my vote is definetely cultural!
