I agree with most of the answers - and you REALLY want to check to make certain that a nearby fan, either on the case, the motherboard, the videocard etc. is not the real problem - usually
it is the FAN that makes this noise first.
Iff you are certain it is a drive, then the suggestions are correct,
it would be loosing its motor bearings, and starting to brinnell,
which will cause failure at any moment. Back things up.
But... check the fans first. You can check a fan that you have access to
by using the pencil eraser on the center of the spinning part,
and just touching it to see if the noise changes, briefly.
If the loud noise quits, you have found your problem. If you dont
have access to the fan because of grating or placement, you could unplug it, to see if that is the problem ( briefly ).
Good luck

It's probably the fan kicking on, but if it's really loud and you are sure it's from the hard drive, then shut down immediately if you want to try to save the data, because it's crashing. But what would I know, I'm on crack! ;) Have a good day!

If you know for sure it's your harddrive and not a fan, then back up everything you want to keep, because your harddrive is about to stop working.

Back up all your data and reformat the hard drive. I think your hard drive is going to die on you any second.
