There is a leak in one of the connectors that goes through the motor, it seems almost impossible to get the two pipes flush and a leak occurs when the water pressure mounts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have tried using sealant, but it did not work

Sounds like a leak at a return union. They typically have a 2 inch O ring in there, which may have been either pinched or is so old to have been compressed to nothing. I tend to lean towards the pinch, as you mention that you can't get things flush. Did you swap out something to cause this? A little more info on why this suddenly happened and what the circumstances are leading to it, would help.
Forget using any sealants on the exterior of a return pipe. It won't work. Post additional info and I'll try to help.

if they are pvc pipe, there should be some kind of gasket where the pipes meet, looks like a big plastic ring, or maybe a black rubber ring. Alignment is most critical if the pipes don't line up before you start to tighten them then they won't seal. they should start to tighten with your hand. Maybe the motor moved a little and can be reset.

Your not going to be able to smear the outside of the pipe with any material, you are going to have to cut the broken/leaking piece out and glue in a replacement piece. This can be pretty difficult, so you may want to check with a local spa sales store and find out who they use for installations and repairs.
