The perfect Lawn:
Ah. I fought the lawn, and the lawn won.

Start with good base of top soil. If you want any high or low spots, or level, or slope, now is the time.

Plant with your choice of Lawn seed - sprinkle the seed with a whirley bird or sead spreader. Rake in 1/4 inch.

Water every day in the morning and evening before the sun goes down. This is important until the seed germinates, opens and spreads roots into the dirt to get moisture. Proper watering is simply to water until the soil gets shiney surface from a spray immitating rain. Once the soil gets shiney, stop, and count how many seconds it takes for the shiney surface to disappear - 3 seconds, you have enough water to start the germination process, and I believe for watering also (some disagree with me).

Now, you have a lawn started, and you want to make it better. Depending on your area, you may use a Starter fertilizer that you buy in bags from your local Lowes or HD. Spread it according to the instructions. Your lawn will take off. Do not mow it until it is really deep (3 to 4 inches long).

Use SCOTTS Turf builder next, and follow the instructions. You need to build the soil nutrients, kill bugs, and ferterlize at recommended times thereafter.

Water is a MUST - every hot day. The hotter, more water. Mow it high - 3 inches - your lawn will be cushion to your feet.

As far as cats go, I have several answers but the most humane follows:
Cats hate Cayenne pepper. Sprinkle it (powder) liberally on your lawn. They also hate garlic. You can get the pepper cheap a dollar store.

perfect lawn, no idea. Cats crapping, well sit back and read. Get some 35mm film canisters (the ones that hold the film prior to putting in the camera) bury them level with the ground and half film them with ammonia. This makes the cat think there's a bigger cat about and it buggers off. You will have to top them up from time to time but its worth it. I use this on my garden which is all stones and looks like a big litter tray and it works.

Get some lawn feed that you hose on from B&Q, as for the cats they normally go where there is soil not grass so maybe create a border with plants somewhere! also cats hate orange peel (the smell of) but that looks crap on your garden too!

If cats crap on it you will never have a perfect lawn. Get a dog? One who knows hes not allowed to go on the lawn....lol. Seriously, get a fence and a pea shooter.

you have to start with good grass... if you don't have a good stand of grass, you're fighting a loosing battle from the start... Where you live will determine the type of grass to plant... once you've got your grass started then Scott's make's great products for feeding and protecting it... as for the cats, the cat crap probably isn't bad for your yard... just don't step in it.

Check with your local lawn and garden place and have them recomend which grass works best for your area... I live in KY and lots of people like to plant bluegrass, but it doesn't hold up very well in the summer heat.... Falcon Fescue is a much better choice for this part of the country.

You can't have a perfect lawn without cat crap on it, its not possible, unless, of course, you have dog crap on it.

Spray amonia around the perimeter of the lawn or near bushes or places you see them go. Or you can go to a Garden supply store and they sell products just for that.

Whole books have been written on this subject. The answer lies in the soil. Cats, buy a dog, but they will do the same.
