For a bedroom that is over a fairly noisy street with floor-to-ceiling windows (sliding door on one of them), what is the best way to soundproof the room. I don't mind blocking out the view for that particular room.

Concrete is one of the best sound barriers.
Multi plexes often use concrete between the floors and ceilings of upper and lower levels, and between the horizontal walls that divide the dwelling into units.

You could also add another pane of glass or replace the glass with heavier glass with pockets designed to help block out sound.

A quick and easy adjustment would be to make heavy curtains out of "sound blankets". Sound blankets are really heavy quilted packing blankets used by the film industry to absorb unwanted sound and also to remove hollow sounds by removing echo/bounce. They're a great muffler. You could try film equipment rental houses or packing/moving companies.

You can errect a wall outside the window to deflect the street noise away from the window, and block off the view into the room from the street. You can leave some space between the wall and the windows and sliding door to make a small patio out the door. Be sure to extend the wall past the end of the windows (both height and width), and consider closing the ends back to your house for the best effect. Construction should include dead air space for the best effect.

Heavy curtains and carpet on the floor, even tapestries on the walls will help. The heavy curtains will block the sound from coming in and fabrics on the floor and walls will absorb the sound to dampen it further (rather than a hard surface which would reflect the sound waves). A canopy or curtains around the bed would help, too.

Sound deadening materials, carpeting & window treatments will help. If you have solid surface floors, consider adding an area rug. Consider planting shrubs outside, or placing plants on the balcony if you have one.
