Hello there...
This is a great question, and the answers above are really stupid.
One states that 3.11 is " DOS "... duh...
I would not worry too much about having XP find the Windows
3.11 computer ( note that you must have WFG 3.11 - Windows for Workgroups version ). Set up a Workgroup on the Win3.11
ethernet card with typical settings for that era. I have never tried it,
but it should not be any different than XP finding ethernet access to
Win95, 98, Me etc. instantly, which it does.
You may have to open and close a few times, and use the
FIND COMPUTER button, but it should work. I have used Win3.11 with 98, NT, ME, and 95 at the same time, so that
W3.11 should work with XP,
Set up the W3.11 first, then plug in th PnP XP... good luck.
Some Net Guru may help, - I have 200 or more older computers,
and realy want to know the answer myself. I am putting this question
on my watch list -- thanks for asking - If I find the answer I will
post it...

You can't use ethernet with DOS. It doesn't include any network layer.
1) why don't you try an old Laplink (v3 should be fine) with its parallel cable. It should work fine.
2) develop a little program exchanging data through a parallel/serial port from both computers....not very difficult to do !
Good luck
