How does t9 mode in text messaging work?

I try texting out a message, but then all these additional letters appear when i punch something in. What is the most effecient way to use this method?

just push the button that contains the letter from the word once for example - attitude would be 28848833, the dictionary should guess what you're trying to say, if it's a word like "no", "on" will probably show up first, in that case there should be a button, either the * 0 or # depending on your phone, push it once and it will change it to the next option.
