Easy it would have to be for me Rincewind the wizard and all of the other wizards from unseen university in the Terry Pratchett novels. They are called the disk world series you need not read them in any order but there are like 20 out and a new one coming in October. If you like to laugh and if you appreciate humor on par with the Hitch hikers guide you will love these books.

I know that you are asking about mythical magicians but everyone seems to be taking it as who is the best ( real) magician I woould have to say David Copperfield I worked for him for a long time and can't say that I care for him much personally but he is the best there is at what we do go back and watch the old TV shows they really blow away any of the david Blanes Chris Angels or Lance Burtons ( I know lance and he is a nice guy)

I was going to say Belgarion (David Edding, 10 book series if I remeber correctly), because he doesn't know what he does half the time: he's as stupid as Naruto (manga character in the manga of the same name) and has enough power to distroy half the world if he doesn't think before doing something.
but since Eddings has already been quoted twice, I'll say:
Rand Al'Thor, in the "Wheel of Time" books (more than 10) by Robert Jordan. Because he has more power than any living magician and is mad and gets madder by the second. Great combination for explosive situations, don't you think?

Arch Chancellor Mustrum Ridcully from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I don't think he's ever been a main character but he's easily my favourite, particularly in the last continent and reaper man.

Yeah would go for Rincewind from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, but in the later books, all the wizards are great, especially the orangutan :o)

Ok so it's not a magician persey....because it's a woman. But my favorite is Vivian in the Mysts of Avalon. She's powerful, protective of what's hers and will not take the pisss from anyone, even King Arthur LOL
But Pyrates in DragonBone chair is a scary magician. Bad guy.

I'm fond of Taliesin. He's to be found in a trilogy of books by Stephen Lawhead.
Taliesin is the first book of the Pendragon Cycle. Then there is Arthur & Merlin, or perhaps the other way around.
Hope you discover this series. It's really good.
