Hi there:
Because you have laptop, your options are somewhat limited
All the suggestions above have some merit.
First, you want to get rid of all the programs that are running
in the background when you boot, and this is a LONG list.
Just click on the programs, and open them when you need them.
You can see what is running with either built in tools in XP or MSCONFIG in Win98 or use PROCESS EXPLORER ( free off the web ) or similar programs. There are Window Washer like tools to clean up all the junk using an easy interface, and they
can help. Just cleaning up Windows itself is a BIG item. I would
suggest a CLEAN re-Install to get rid of tons of garbage that is collecting over time, but this can only be done on a laptop if you really know your system, where to get all the drivers ( toshiba.com ) and how to install them from scratch.
Disk Defragmenting a " washed and cleaned" system is helpful.
Then, you get to the hardware...
You can upgrade the harddrive in a laptop to a faster spinning one with more I/O memory - you have to get the model number of the one you have, and then go out and compare to newer, faster ones. This makes a big difference if you have a slower drive.
Since you already have a 100 Gig drive spinning at 4200 RPM,
you would really have to look hard to find a better one, but it is possible. Pay attention to the amount of RAM on the drive that buffers the data read/write. It makes a significant difference.
You can upgrade the RAM cards in the memory slots to what ever the max is allowed for that model.... Go onliine to toshiba.com
and get the max specs and check laptop stores or eBay or
tigerdirect to see what new ram costs. This will usually speed up
a computer, depending on what you have, and how much you can add. Since the standard " as shipped" for an P35 is 512 MEGS, and there are only 2 slots available, the limit would be about 2 Gigabytes with two, one-Gig ram cards. One slot
would typically be filled with a 512, leaving you one slot for a
1 Gig card. Iff you have 2 cards of 250, filling both slots, you
would have to remove one in order to upgrade at all. Your choice,
but at 1 GIG, you will find an OS like XP really starts to perform well, since the Virtual memory on the harddrive is almost zero,
speeding up all applications.
SOME ( I don't know your model, but thank you for supplying the info ) laptops may have a CPU card that you might be able to upgrade within the limits pre-defined by that series. CPU's generally, by themselves are not replaceable on most modern name-brand computers. Again, check the manual. Phone a
laptop center and ask if the CPU can be upgraded on that model.
If you can upgrade, it is usually a green circuitboard with a CPU bonded to it, that must be replaced. Knowing my Toshiba's in the past, though, you probably can't upgrade just the CPU. At
3.48Ghz with an Intel P4 with 1MegaByte of L2 cache, I really can't imagine what you are doing that is so slow that you have to upgrade in the first place. I can only suspect that you have hundreds of software programs installed, that, by default, all open and run in the background as soon as you turn on your machine, slowing it to a crawl.
By running a CLEAN windows, and adding a bit of ram, you can
tweak the unit a bit. After a point though, you are forced to get a
new unit if the speed is just not fast enough for the work you want to do.... ( can't imagine what that would be, but, too slow is too slow )
hope this helps...

Not familiar with that model, but it sounds like a laptop. The cheapest and quickest way to upgrade your speed would be to get some more ram (go up to at least 512 or 1gb) and if you have less than 512, you'll probably notice a speed difference.

The best way is to add more memory. You can go to Toshiba's support website and it will tell you the kind you need and how to install it.

If you are looking to speed up your computer. Go into the bios and advance to user settings and over clock the CPU to maximum.

Defragment the hardrive, disable certain programs from starting up when the computer starts up, put more memory in the computer, and if possible, upgrade your processor.
