You need to get an extra category on your license unless you passed your driving test before 1997 in which case you can drive them.

Yes,You need to apply for a provisional C class licence which also gives you provisional entitlement for class C+E. The C class allows you to drive any rigid vehicle that is over 7.5 tonnes, the C+E allows you to drive an articulated vehicle over 7.5 tonnes. Before you are issued with your provisional, you will have to sit the DOE Hazard perception test and also be able to answer30 multiple choice questions on this category. Get yourself a copy of the questions to read up on. The book is available from most good book shops. I also got the CD rom and practised the hazard perception test on my PC before i sat the test. When you pass this test, you will be given a certificate which you hand in with your licence and the DVLA give you your provisional. You then must pass a test same as any other driving test only in a lorry. If you pass this test, you can then go on and do your C+E but you must hold a C class 1st. Some people have answered stating that you have entitlement to drive if you have held your licence pre 1997, this only allows them to drive vehicles from 3.5 tonnes up to 7.5 tonnes.Any person who received their licence since 1997 does not have this.I recently passed my test and got the C class so i think that the info should still be current. Any driving school should be able to put you on the right track.

As everyone said ... If you passed your drivng test prior to 1st Jan 1997 you would have the C1 entitlement (7.5) on your licence. After that date, you would only have Category B which allows you to drive up to 3.5 tonnes. If you are over the age of 21 you may as well take your Cat' C (HGV class 2) as it's nearly as much money to do the C1. If you are under 21, then you have to take the C1 test before you can get your Cat C licence.

You can drive up to a 7.5 tonne single rear axle lorry with an ordinary full UK driving licence.
I think you need an HGV class 3 if it has twin rear axles even if it is still only plated for 7.5tonne because the plating can be changed to a higher weight using the same lorry.
But in short for 7.5 tonne an ordinary licence is all you need !

a full car driving licence enables you to drive a 7.5 ton veh. but it might be fitted with a tachograph, which you have to be up to speed on.
