i had an abnormal pap when i was pregnant with my oldest son...they will just need to keep a close eye on you throughout your pregnancy, so don't worry. with me i had pre-cancerous cells (which they even told me when the pap came back). so, ask your dr. more questions...call and talk to the nurse midwife, or dr. if you can't wait for the next visit. they can come back abnormal if you even have an infection (like yeast, or whatever). so, find out more, but more than anything don't panic!!!
my son will be 21 this month! so, we both did fine!

Unfortunately it can mean several different things so that doesn't clear much up for you. Usually the abnormality is caused by inflammation and can be cleared up with a little treatment such as yeast treatment. Then it can be caused by some cervical cells becoming abnormal (not looking or acting like they should) Your doctor will repeat the PAP and if it's inflammation, probably not treat anything until after the baby is born because a lot of abnormalities clear up on their own. The best thing you can do is just have your doctor follow it closely - maybe a PAP every six months until everything is back to normal. Have a happy baby.

When I got my first abnormal pap while pregnant, I was told that due to cervical changes during pregnancy, it's not unusual to get an abnormal pap.
It's also possible that your abnormal pap is unrelated to your pregnancy, and you will get another abnormal result with your next test. One possibility is that you have HPV (fairly common), and while some kinds of HPV are cancer-causing, many are not.
I have since tested positive for HPV, and I have a kind that's unlikely to cause cancer, but I still have to repeat my pap every 3 months. If my results don't return to normal on their own after 1-2 years, I'll need to have the damaged cells freezed off. It sounds scary at first, but I trust my care provider and am not that worried.
Anyway, it's possible that your abnormal pap was just a fluke, or it could be something more. Only further tests will be able to tell you for sure.
Good luck!

It may not mean anything, sometimes if you have sex the night before a pap or have a slight yeast infection, it may cause you to have an abnormal pap. Your doctor will probably do another pap on you. If the second pap comes back negative, then you're fine. If it comes back abnormal again, then that means that you may have precancerous cells, DON'T WORRY. This happened to my cousin and she had a scrapping of the cells. but majority of the time, when a pap comes back abnormal and then you retest, everything is fine. And don't listen to the person who said you're not suppose to have a pap in the early stages of pregnancy, that's the only time during the pregnancy that you should have a pap.

Before I was pregnant I had a pap, and it came back normal. Now that I'm pregnant, I had another and it came back abnormal...I flipped! I had no idea what was wrong. The Dr. told us that it could be HPV, which can also lead to cancer. In my case, she said it wasn't pre-cancerous cells (thank god!) They are going to do another test to tell what it is, and treat it. Then after i have the baby (3 months after) they said they will do a follow up. Hope this helps a little, I'm still not too sure what it is for sure!

Your doctor can tell you more. It might be a temporary change, or it might be evidence of cervical cancer or an STD. Either way, you'll be sent for more testing. If it's pre-cancer, most of the time they'll give it a few months before testing again, then consider treatment. By the time they get around to treating it, you'll have given birth. If it's an STD, they'll probably give you a C-section.
Either way, if it's one abnormal pap smear, it's not a big deal yet. Just go back for more testing to make sure it doesn't become one.

really means nothing in most cases. Many women have abnormal paps while pregnant. They may redo to double check for any cells that my look cancerous but usually they end up waiting till the baby is born then do another pap which usually turns out normal.

Normal...No that is why they are abnormal results. But you should ask what the lab results said. They usually state more on the lab form then just abnormal. I would talk to your Ob/Gyn and ask a lot of questions so that you are comfortable with the out come. If you feel that Dr is not answering you, get copies of the results and consult another. Good Luck to you.

It can mean any number of things. One possibility is B-strep. If this is the case you will need an antibiotic drip during delivery. Check this site out too. http://tell-someone.hpv.com/ this is a virus that causes abnormal paps and goes virtually undetected.
Hope this helps.

First go to the doctor and ask. Mine was because I had cervical cancer cysts. I had to wait until after the twins were born then I had laser surgery. Could be something totally different for you, that was what I went through. Better to consult a doctor as to why it came back abnormal. Good luck
