Feeder guppies are usually quite small so 8 for a 3 inch oscar is not too many. But....
You should really consider switching him over to pellets. There is very little nutritional value in feeder fish and you always run the risk of introducing a disease when you throw the feeders into his tank. Feeder fish are raised outdoors in ponds and anything can get in there with them. Then they come to your house.
Oscars get quite large (up to 14" and larger) and will require more and more food if he lives through the feeder fish. I have raised oscars and had 5 that were in the range of 10-14 inches.
I fed them goldfish until I learned about the parasites and diseases that come with live feeders and then switched them to dry dog food pellets. Just make sure it is a good grade of dog food with around 40-50% protein. They do fine with it. Or you can shell out the bucks at the LFS and feed him prepared oscar pellets. They are very good, but pricey.
Oscars are carnivorous in the wild and need good protein in their food. Feeding live feeders is just playing Russian Roulette with your fish's life.

You should not feed "feeder fish" to your oscar. In the wild, an oscar will eat insects, snails, shrimp, crawfish, even fruit that fall into the water. They will very rarely eat other fish and usually they'll only scavenge dead fish.
You need to put your oscar on a pelleted cichlid food right away. Pelleted food will provide complete nutrition, unlike feeder fish.
Also, giving him feeders can actually kill your oscar. Since they don't normally feed primarily on fish, the oscar's digestive system cannot get rid of the parasites from the feeder fish. These parasites tend to burrow their way out of the gut and through the skin causing a disease called "hole in the head". It is a ver serious illness that can cause death. In some cases it is treatable, but the fish will always have a scar from the parasite literally boring a hole through your oscar's flesh and bones!
A pelleted diet will prevent your fish from having a parasitic infestation.
And DO NOT feed them dog food! That person is an idiot!!!

No Oscars are known for a large appetite and rapid growth. i have an Oscar and buy it 20 feeder goldfish a week plus normal food. Besides a fish won't eat more than they want.

Feeding feeders to an Oscar is unneccesary. It could result in unwanted disease affecting your fish, because the feeders are kept overstocked and in a disease ridden environment unless you don't breed them yourself. It is way better to just feed pellets instead, not to mention healthier. But eight feeders for a 3-inch oscar is more than enough. I think 4 should do it, if you breed them yourself.

You might also consider Oscar pellets as a food suppliment. Soon your Oscar will grow and require feeder goldfish.

in spite of their general and voracious urge for nutrition, Oscars are companies to considered one of those issues related with nutrition habitual, in many cases via fact of an uninformed proprietor. the 1st is their fussiness: refusal to consume basically ingredients which they are transforming into accustomed. it incredibly is surely cured as long via fact the owner is greater resolute then the fish. If the nutrition is omitted then it is bumped off and the fish is left hungary till day after today. This potential of attrition would could proceed for weeks, yet invaribly suceeds as long via fact the owner is steadfast. far greater intense are the end results of feeding long term on wrong ingredients, usuallyy pellets. this would consequence in intestinall issues, with the fish resting on the backside now and back with, yet in many cases with out abdominall swelling and refusing to feed. a added difficulty is those fish are extremelyy messy feeders which waste cloud of particlel by the gills. it incredibly is obviatedd by utilising feeding them their organic nutrition factors, uncooked fish, crustaceans, bugs and the occasional green stuff.
