In the 1990's, Unocal dreamed up an idea of running an oil pipeline from Turkmenistan ( natural gas ) through Afghanistan to Pakistan and possibly India. They would do this so as to avoid having to deal with Russia and Iran. This plan was to be a joint venture between Unocal and and Saudi Arabia's Delta Oil Co. So the poppie fields theory is just too much of a stretch.

It looks like the fields are already back in production. No, that is not the real reason we are there. It is not a good situation at all, is it? Too bad they aren't planting food crops and other more practical crops. But miserable people with not much to live for tend to plant things that will just make them feel better quickly.
