Ignorance breeds tragedy. The muslim world never lets go of any offense, however minor - and seems to be more comfortable with unilateral strikes on others than anyone in the west. I can't speak for the US or Israel, but I can say that the only leadership using antagonistic language, like calling the west "the enemy" and "the great Satan" is Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas (among other Muslim constituents). As a US citizen and a Christian I can honestly say that my only desire is for people of all nations to keep to themselves, not strive to hurt eachother, and not go about deciding who is and isn't worthy of _living_ in the eyes of "God/Allah" or whatever the flavor of the day for unreasonable reasons to kill people is over there. I'm tired of it. Furthermore, I can promise you that the majority of Americans share the opinion that we are NOT responsible for the actions of the nations of the middle east (including Israel) and that any attack on us will be dealt with - not just retaliated to, but treated with the righteous fury and indignation of the innocent (as we perceive ourselves). Combine that with the fact that we have the greatest resources and military might on the planet and it's probably a good idea not to mess with the U.S. You can look to the response to 9/11 as an example of what happens when you poke the sleeping giant.

Short answer: we just want to be left alone. Yes we have a mutual protection treaty with Israel. Other nations are equally capable of forming the same type of treaty, and in fact - many have.
