I am considering changing trades and becomming a teacher. I understand that it's far from all fun and games and it's a lot of work. I have taken a few ( personality / carrier tests)
and they point to teaching or social services. I hear that the need for teachers is high. I also hear that the need is low because people are not having as many kids today. What do you hear. Is teaching a good trade to get into. I think I would love to be able to help todays youth

Teaching in general can be a very crazy job. I'll try to tell you what I know about it.

First off, the need for teachers is rather mixed. It really depends on the area that you live in and if the population figures have decreased, increased, or stayed the same. But you still should be able to find a job as a teacher with people retiring and all that. It shouldn't be too hard but you still may run across some difficulties.

Next, you need at least a Bachelor's degree as far as I know. A Masters would be great and with a Ph.D you can become a college professor. The higher your degree there's obviously a better chance of being employeed.

But then again, if you've ever been flipping through the channels and come across whatever they're showing on MTV, it's not pretty. You're going to have to put up with kids with learning disabilities (from very mild to moderate, otherwise they're put in Special Ed.), kids who think the media controls their lives and not their parents and the kids that think they're better than the world, including you. Be prepared to contact a lot of kids' parents over behavior issues in class if you do become a teacher.

And of course there's the staff you'll be working with. You'll find people you'll be in contact with for the rest of your life and also people you wish God made into Martians instead of Earthlings ploped right into you. The only thing I can say is it's like a big game of Texas No Limit Hold 'em. Re-raise when you have to and fold when you need to.

There is a high need for teachers in lower income and inner city schools. In nicer school systems, there are fewer job opportunities. If you are willing to work in a high needs school system, you probably could be hired on a probationary license. This way you could take the classes and become certified to teach while teaching. The school system may even be able to pay for some of the classes. Teaching is a wonderful career to get into if your heart is in it. It's a ton of work and very exhausting mentally, emotionally, and physically often. It's all worth it though, if it fulfills you. Good luck to you on your decision!

Entering any profession (in the true sense of the meaning of that word--a calling, service to people) should not be taken lightly. It is not a trade, like carpentry. You are dealing with people's most treasured things, their kids.
That said, I would recommend you visit schools and sit in on classes, speak with teachers, speak with administrators, find out what it's about before you make any commitments. I assure you, teaching is not for everyone, no matter what a personality test may suggest.

Before you teach anyone you had better learn to spell or at least to use the tools that would correct your spelling before you go public. It's career and becoming.
