It is called Universal Precautions. Most peole are healthy, but to keep from becoming contaminated from that little population of infected people, you treat everything and everyone as infected.

Because of cross contamination, urine is not really sterile it is the bodys waste and could contain bartiria and do not want on your hands even with the tinest cut in the skin, also to protect the person the sample came from if you have something on your hands it could cause a false positve.

Urine is sterile until it reaches the opening of the urethra...as is passes through this opening, it can become contaminated with bacteria from the perineal area. In contrast, urine that is infected is obviously not sterile...one common urinary infection is VRE (vancomyocin resistant ennterococcus) whichis an infection that is highly resistant to antibiotics.
Theorectically, urnie (which is uninfected) is sterile when it comes out of a sterile catherization becuase it is never exposed to the perineal area.

Urine is actually sterile and full of many nutrients, so said the Hindus and many other cultures. Indians and other peoples used it for urine therapy, French used it to apply to the face for facial therapy, portable toilets in the US are owned by a major corporation that does pharmaceutical research by extracting man-produced chemicals from urine.
However, urethra, the tube that connects the bladder to you excretion opening can contain bacteria and makes the urine unsterile as it comes out.

in you question you said it is sterile in healthy people, if you think about it, most specimens are from hospitals, (sick people) trying to find out why they are ill.
yes some of the specimens are from clinics used for people who are trying to get a job where they have to be clean, but some of those folks have colds and you could get infected, the urine could be tainted with AIDS, HIV and other infectious diseases.
hope this helps you

It really isn't sterile - it contains all kinds of stuff. When you give a specimen you don't want it to get contaminated so you can test it properly

Because you don't what's on the hands of the person handling the specimen. They can contaminate your speciman because they had something else on their hands. Then you could get a negative response from the testing.

It's only sterile for the first 30 seconds after leaving the body.
Plus, how do you know who's healthy and who's not.
