It is a 1981 model and the coating on it now is an oil based silver color.

The material that is there is actually the proper coating. This is a mixture of tar and aluminum often called "trailer topping". If it is a single-wide, 2-5 gallon buckets of Silver Dollar aluminum roof coating available at Lowe's or Home Depot will do the job.
First, pressure-clean the roof to get rid of dirt and fungi. Next, patch any cracks with polyurethane caulk. I use O.S.I. Pro-Series (white) at $4.50 tube. Mixing the roof coating is a lot of work. It's gooey and stubborn, but take your time and mix it well for a good job. Apply with a heavy-nap roller with an extension. Wear old shoes and clothes. When you get done, you may have to toss what you're wearing.
This should be re-applied every five years to keep it in top condition.

It would be best to use a similar product because it not only seals, but reflects light and heat, keeping it cool. If there are bad leaks you might use "bull tar" first. The silver is called "Sealcoat" I believe. See Lowes or Home Depot.

its called cool seal, also a lot of people are nowing going with the rubber roof . they cover the roof with a sheet of rubber . they glue down as they roll it out. it suppose to be really strong and safe.

I am a roofer by trade. You need to use "silver dollar" elastomeric or Kool seal" for mobile homes. VERY $.

They make aluminum cool seal, it comes in gallon containers and you apply it with a paint roller. It is easy to do and you can do it yourself.

Yes the silver paint is trailer paint. (aluminum paint) That is what you use.
