It doesn't save electricity... It can save you money on your bill. Electric companies are going to output around the same amount of electric whether you use it or not... some will tell you that "there are computers that sense how much power is being used and will lower fuel consuption based on that" well that's BS (especially if you electric source is Nuclear). They might have some mecanism in place, but this is usually only in cases where too much power is being used and "additional alternate power stations" need to be activated. Under normal circumstances... not using it is wasting it... the only benifit is that you bill will be lower.

You're right that electricity can't be stored for future usage. Electricity isn't like a commodity, but you're measured by how much you've used by the meter. Therefore, turning off your appliances and lights when not in use will save your money. If you turn off your electricity in peak times, then you're helping the electric company to keeping up with the demand and operate more efficiently. Hence, less downtime and repair costs equal lower prices to all consumers.
If you look outside around your house, you'll see a something like a glass bowl covered a round metal meter disc. This is your electric meter and it's get read every month by a guy or a gal from your electric company to determined how much you have used. In some areas, electric meters are remotely read.

Erm. Could have phrased your question better, but anyway.
Most electrical products consume some amount of electricity just by being plugged in. TVs and other products that go to a "stand-by" mode consume quite a lot more. Some even mention how much in their handbooks.
That is why unplugging or switching off entirely will save electricity.
I have my TV and other gadgets on one of those multiple power socket adapters with a switch so all I have to do is flick it when I'm going out. At least one bit of excercise I do bending over to find the switch...

It saves on two levels.
First you save money on electricity bill and a hospital giving life saving treatment is not denied electricity.
Then, if all of us consume less, the computer on the power network can sense that. And cut back on fuel input to the power stations. So that, same quantity of fuel lasts longer. That saves fuel for our grand children and of course, saves many lives by stopping oil wars.
Therefore let us switch off when we don't really need power.

when youswitch off the electricity, the flow of the current will be slower if it wont completely stop.... the lesser the current consumed the lesser would be your electric bills...:-) but constant switching off and on in just a matter of minute or second could also waste electricity...

Turning something off stops the electricity from flowing through it. The less electricity you have flowing through, say, your house, the lower your electric bill.
The main savings from using less electricity occur due to losses from generation (at the plant), transmission (losses on power lines distributing electricity), and the user (inefficiencies at the consumer).

Your house has a current of electricity running through it. When you turn on something some of that electricity flows into whatever you turned on to power it. This causes some of that energy to be lost as it flows through that object. So leaving things turned off reduces the amount of electricty you use.

it will save you money and increase the profit for the companies producing the energy.
You will now use less energy so therefore be charged less Hence less $$ on your bill.
However the energy company will still produce as much energy as they can to maximize production and profit. If you do not use the energy produced the energy company will then sell the energy to other energy companies that have an increased usage in their areas. Energy is moved from grid to grid from company to company - it is a commodity to be purchased and sold if not used at its sources, but it cant be stored.
In short turning off your appliances will save you money increase the profits of the energy producers and not decrease energy production.
