Jim seems to speak for all liberals. I am just curiuos, are all liberals this hateful and closeminded? Jim has forgotten that the Southern Democrats were the ones who fought the civil rights movement. Is this kind of hate speech indictive of a person or group who wishes harm on his fellow americans? He seems to have forgotten that moderate southerners exiled the KKK.

Let's not forget the fact that Bush's administration has more minorities working for him than any democratic administration EVER! Nice to see democrats are consistant with HYPOCRISY!

First off, no one speaks for me. I am quite capable of doing it myself. Secondly, "shameless character assassination" is a part of modern politics, and it is done by both sides, although Republicans seem to be better at it. Is it consistent with democratic though? No.

Dixiecrat's were conservative white Southerners, most of whom, like Strom Thurmond, eventually aligned with the Republican Party. The majority opposed racial integration and wanted to retain Jim Crow laws and racial segregation. The ACLU did fight several good civil rights cases, including Brown v. Board of Education and Loving vs. Virginia, both of which were opposed by Dixiecrat's.
Johnson (D), in 1964, lost the deep south because he advocated passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. No Democrat won the deep south again until Carter in 1976.

Southern Democrats were the ones fighting hardest AGAINST the civil rights movement. Most "southern Democrats" of the 60's, like Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms and Phil Gramm, had switched to the Republican party by the early 80's. Southern Democrats now are very much like their northern counterparts - moderate to liberal and pro-civil rights- now that the Dixiecrats have shown their true allegiance and have gone to the other side.

I am not a Dem., Byrd is not "my guy". I haven't seen a politician in a long time worthy of the office they hold, with the possible exception of a few of the former Governors in my state. Why does it seem like only the most morally repugnant people this country has to offer go into national politics. Don't we deserve better?
