There is no magic bullet. All alternative technologies have drawbacks that prevent widespread acceptance. Hydrogen can't be transported using the existing pipelines, you'd basically need to transport all the hydrogen by truck or train...which is much less efficient and consumes the fuel itself. If you make ethanol out of corn, it would take every ear of corn produced in the US to provide less than half the amount of fuel we consume. Biodiesel would be very difficult to standardize - if you have a few people asking restaurants for used grease it works, if everyone starts banging their doors down it isn't such a great solution. It's all about taking small steps in the right direction.

are you asking what is the most efficient gasoline you can put in your car?
if so, the grades of gasoline have very little to do with improving mileage. Higher octanes make for better/more thorough explosions but none can detectably improve MPG
are you asking which fuel can be the most efficent for a car? Probably diesel, a small car with a diesel engine has better MPG than a gasoline one
