It's a misunderstanding. Many people believe it's the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar and therefore the end of time and the world. In truth it's the end of the 12th Baktun, no different from our calendar going from 1999 to 2000 except that a Baktun is 396 years long. The 13th Baktun begins on 12-21-2012.
Also on that day is a grand astronomical alignment that only happens every 26,000 years. On that winter solstice morning, the sun will rise against the area of the Milky Way the Maya believed was the birth canal of the universe and be reborn. New sun=new world age.
However this does NOT signify the end of the old world age, which is already over, and has been for 10-20 years.

Sounds like you have heard about the Mayan (or is it Aztec?) prediction that some cycle in their calendar is due to conclude in 2012. And the world as we know it is supposed to come to an end.
I remember seeing a TV program that said the legend claimed that animals and tools would "turn on us" and try to do away with humans.
All fun stuff, but do I believe it?
No, not for a second.
I mean, how many times has a prediction of the End of the World come to naught?

Well, I don't think anyone knows when the end of the world will be. The Mayan calandar ends on this year so a lot of people believe it will be the end of the world--just like they thought it would be when the millenium started and we are not six years into it and still here!!!

I think the Mayans just got tired of writing out the dates, so just ended it on the 12-21-2012 just because they liked the look of the date.
