You need to download a driver for your audio device, if you have a branded system like dell or something, you can just go to their website, go to support, select your make and model and download the driver you need. Otherwise you need to find out the make of the audio card you have and you can search for a driver for that using google.com

If you don't have a sound card in your computer, you have to find out which motherboard you have in your computer. Once you find out what mb you have,go to that manufacturer's website to find the drivers you need to get your sound back. Sometimes it can be real trying on the patience to get sound back. If you have a sound card, simply identify it and go to it's website to get the drivers.

The same thing happened to me, spent a year trying to get the drivers from hp (brand of my computer). Eventually had to get recovery discs from hp, now everything works. When you loaded XP it erased everything the manufacturer loaded on the computer. Easiest way is to call manufacturer, sorry.
