I want to be an event planner but i need to gain some experience. I'm looking for an internship, apprentice or even volunteer work. If anyone has any advice or have any help to offer please do.

This sounds like fun. Why dont you start small to understand the business completely. Throw a birthday party, host a baby shower, or even have a themed night in with friends! Small things like this will help you understand some of the responsibilities.

You dont say if you want to eventually run your own business one day or just work at one but either way school always help. Study business, there's so many directions you can take on this. Most internships require you to receive college credits from them and I definitely wouldnt suggest volunteer because you'd most likely be taken advantage of UNLESS its like for a community or religion based company like a nursing facility, hospital, or helping serve the homeless on a holiday like Thanksgiving.

Good Luck to you I know I dont have the organizational skill to do this but you sound pretty determined stay stong and God Bless!

Event planning is a brutal business, beyond competitive, 24/7 when you have a job and 25/8 when you're looking for one.

Your best bet is to work as an assistant for an event planner, most of whom work for themselves. There are very few firms that actually plan parties and events on a large scale in the same way that other consulting companies exist.

Flip through the wedding and catering pages and ask anyone if they'd like help. If they say they're not hiring, ask if you can do an 'informational interview' - you interview them, ask them for half an hour (and keep it to 25 minutes - time is presh), and send them a thank you card three days later.

This internship will most likely be unpaid. Most internships in high-density fields (including journalism and PR, which are related to event planning) are unpaid and still hard to come by.

Good luck.

Probably the best and normally most required experiances would come from at least 2yrs at a Junior College.
