I think you may want to look at the master cylinder first or the proportioning valve that basically gives the front of the car more braking power. It sounds as though one of the valves is not allowing brake fluid to be pushed back into the master cylinder but is sticking. Brake calipers have nothing in them to retract the pistons that push on your brake pads, it's all done by releasing the pressure at the master cylinder. It's not a bad idea to replace the calipers if you can't push the pistons back in with a C-clamp or they are leaking, but the latter seldom occurs. I know everybody is saying "calipers, calipers," but it seems extremely odd to me that both would go bad at the same time.

A competent brake technician can do further diagnosis.
You may not need new calipers, it's possible to rebuild the caliper assembly with new pistons and seals.
Replacement of the entire caliper takes less time for the shop and probably brings in more revenue. However, with new calipers, they can be assured you won't have a call back.
Ask them to quote both ways - rebuild, and replace.

If the front brakes are locking up, it could be from leaking brake fluid coming from the calipers.Calipers can be rebuilt but hardly anyone does this as it just easier to replace with rebuilt ones. Difficult to say without looking at the pads. Best bet would be to get a second opinion from a mechanic you can trust. ASAP, as you need good brakes for your own safety.

That sounds very correct. When calipers go bad they stop releasing after you've pressed the brakes. Thus they are still "dragging" on the wheel, making the car not want to move forward.

Sounds correct... 16 yr old calipers probably need replacing. Take it to a qualified mechanic, costs more, but you get it done correctly the 1st trip

That's probably a good diagnosis. Your front calipers may need to be rebuilt. Is there any sign of leakage from them?
