I know my freshman year I was very much in a shell because I was very homesick (I moved about 4 hours away from home) and my roommates bonded without me and that made it harder, if you do anything befriend your roommates, they will be your strongest allies in college. Also make a chore list so that everyone knows who's being lazy, that was a huge issue in my dorm because until we got a chore list everyone was blaming it on everyone else (and once we got it the house was actually clean). Good luck.

ps. don't bring everything you own (even being 4 hours away I could go home for the extra things I needed)

Oh and one last thing about making friends, join a group like Campus Life (christian) or a sorority or frat, something that you have a lot in common with the people and that way you will automatically make some friends because you already have something in common.

If your in the room, leave the door open. It can be a great way to make friends. Try to make friends with the people in your hall and especially your neighbors.

Be sure to make friends in class as well. Introduce yourself, talk about your first days in college. Having friends in class can be a life saver when you lost on homework or need a study buddy.

It really depends on your personality and willingness to take risks.

Personally, I value my privacy and would be worried about my belongings going "missing." There will be people there whose goal is to take advantage of every situation.

Make friends slowly, and you'll be surrounded with people you can trust. Keep the door closed.

keep your door open, all the time. Walk around naked and invite random guys to come join you in bed.
