I'm not a big fan, but I liked "The Shootist," in which Wayne -- towards the end of his career -- played a gunfighter dealing with a terminal illness. Nice cast, and a solid story.

I love John Wayne movies. It's really hard to pick a favorite, I'm going to say.......The Alamo. Some of my other choices would be True Grit, Stagecoach, In Harm's Way, Sands of Iwo Jima, Sons of Katie Elder, McClintock, and North to Alaska

My grandma got me into John Wayne movies. She just turned 80 this year, and I'm 26. She get me started watching them when I was just a kid. My favorites are McClintock, Big Jake, the Searchers, Rooster Cogburn, and El Dorado

Although it's not (or maybe, because it's not) the quintessential John Wayne movie --I'm not a huge fan of "The Duke" - I'd go with "The Quiet Man".
This is a fun, charming feel-good tale, with an excellent supporting cast, including the beautiful Maureen O'Hara.

If you haven't already seen it, watch The Searchers (1956) which I personally think is #2 following after your and my favorite, The Quiet Man. McQ was also good for a roll that took him far from his standard types.

My favorite John Wayne move was, "The Shootist" which also starred Ron Howard. It was the last movie made by John Wayne and was an excellent end to the great legend.

1) The War Wagon - John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, hard to bet those two together
coming in a close second:
2) Rio Bravo - John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson.... and the star of the movie.... Stumpy (Walter Brennan)
