There is a growing chorus of Americans who believe the U.S. never actually landed on the moon. And given the fact that the shuttle can be brought down by a piece of foam, I'm starting to wonder (though I still believe). What do you think?

This question is getting tiring... There is no "growing chorus", there is simply a small (exteremly small) ground of uninformed, under-educated people who will believe any bit of filth that is thrown in front of them...

These are the folks that are easily sucked into an angry mob even if they have no idea about the cause or justification of the anger...

The Moon landings occurred... If you really have questions, just do a search on the exact question you just asked and there will be many good answers that debunk all the myths...

you can also browse http://www.badastronomy.com for much more on the myths

All I have to say is Occam's Razor...

Is it more likely that hundreds of thousands of NASA employees and contractors, as well as 12 highly respectable astronauts all are in cohoots to deceive the American people...

OR, Did we go to the Moon?

Please tell me which is more obvious...

I have no doubt that the US had several missions which landed on the moon. There is no way such a thing could be so convincingly faked - and what would be the point?

Stephen S - while I appreciate your input about your Father working on the space mission and openly applaud all the engineers, technicians and designers who were involved, your statement "the US has freed 1 Billion people since 1945" intrigues me and I would love to know where you gathered such data. I would trust you are not implying that this was achieved by joining the game so late during World War 2...

Do such numbers help you to forget the vast number of civilian deaths either at US hands or as a direct result of US actions & foreign policy? How about a conservative estimate of 10 million dead - how does that sit with your illusion that the United States has saved the world?

There are many questions along the same lines already asked in Yahoo Answers. Check out the site linked below; it debunks with scientific facts everything that a conspiracy theorist will throw at you. All the "evidence" provided by these guys that think the moon landing was a fake would get laughed out of any reviewed science or engineering journal. This is why you never see any mention of moon landing conspiracy in any credible journals.

Also, one point I like from the Bad Astronomy website that proves the moon landings were real:
Video footage shows the lunar rover kicking up dust. The dust follows a nice parabolic trajectory in the absence of any air (no atmosphere on the moon). So, how could anybody film this on Earth? The answer is: you can't. Not even today do we have vacuum chambers nearly large enough to fit a moving rover inside, and in the 60's video editing wasn't nearly sophisticated enough to add in such an effect. Thus, that footage must have been filmed someplace with no atmosphere, namely the moon.

When I was a teenager My Dad was in charge of the building of the Command Module and also the construction of the heat shield for Apollo. My brother and I visited Avco Rad often in Lowell Mass. late at night with Dad. We witnessed the tedious hand filling and x-raying of each individual cell of the thousands of cells that made up the honeycombs in the Shields and the attachment of the Heat Shields.
All these men were dedicated to the goal of getting to the moon and worked tirelessly to achieve it, tens of thousands of engineers worked in this project to get to the moon. Components were made at factories and assembled all over this country. This was no conspiracy and my Dad gave his all to make it happen.
Billions were spent on this.

In an age where the Government can`t even keep the NY Times from revealing the most sensitive of secrets meant to protect our very lives, how could it be that Hollywood would be able to keep the fake moon landings (multiple) a secret? All those technicians, actors, set designers, cameramen, sound stage, electricians, etc, etc.

It happened, we did it. You can be proud that America is the only nation to do it.
America haters want you to doubt your country and all it has achieved. They change the facts by omission to achieve that goal, fool the gullible, and profit from it.

America went to the moon and also has freed 1 billion people since 1945. That's something no one else has done.

I'd have to disagree with the question somewhat. I don't see a growing number of people doubting the moon landing. Truth is more people believe the U.S. landed on the moon now than in any other time in history. I definetly believe they landed on the moon. I think the bigger question is why has no one ever landed on the moon since? Personally I think it is a huge possibility that the U.S.A. is currently or already has built a secret base on Mars. Call me crazy if ya like.

Yes, I remain comforatable that American astronauts did in fact land on the Moon.

There are always some people who believe in conspiracy theories, that the American public was deceived by the government, and that a fraud was committed.

Unfortunately, such a fraud would require that literally thousands of people are ALL in on the fraud. NASA engineers, hundreds of outside scientists and, of course, the astronauts themselves not to mention the press and many thousands of foreigners.

There will always be those that don't accept that men have landed on the Moon. Understanding human psychology has taught me that even if these people themselves were put on the Moon, they'd still deny it and insist they were kidnapped and that government agents tried to fool them into beleiving they were walking on the Moon.

You name the subject or issue, and you'll always find some individuals who believe in some conspiracy theory about it that contradicts most modern thinking or common acceptance.

I seriously doubt that they did.
If they did, why fake those photographs?. Did they fake the landing, or anticipate bad photography and supply their own proof to pacify the publics anticipation?.
Why is it that they have not concentrated on the moon?. They could have started colonisation on the moon years ago. But what have they done?, they built a space station- in space- the place where the Russians beat them in reaching.
It's like starting a decorating project in one room , then beginning another whilst getting nowhere at the same time.

I do believe that "did we put reflectors on the moon" isn't the question
as some believers cling to.

Watergate demonstrated the inability of the American government to maintain a conspiracy and keep things secret. I find it very hard to believe that they had the ability to stage something of this magnitude and not have genuinely debunked by now.

As for the shuttle, remember that these complex machines have seen far more use than any of the devices created during the space race. They are not failing because of poor design or inferior know-how but rather because of fatigue and wear.

As for people who argue that we cannot currently make it to the moon with the systems we have today, remember that a government administration's priorities change. Much as we may dislike it, the focus has shifted away from space exploration to things far less stellar.

YES!

And where is this "...growing chorus of Americans who believe the U.S. never actually landed on the moon." as I've never heard that song and it was obviously the B-side of some one hit wonder!

'nuff said!

your question is always the favorite question of each day and to those who do not search for the right answer will always say yes the American astronauts did land in the moon but they lied and still trying to hide the truth but bcoz a lot of people were so apprehensive that they believe all lunar landing were just a product of imagination this lead them in painstakingly gathered expert studies that no doubt would proved that lunar landing was just a hoax

visit the website and see by yourself and if neil armstrong could read this sir tell us exactly and swear that you really did walk on the moon
