Facts and reasons supported by facts & logic. Please avoid mere stmts of opinions like "they hate us," or "they are irrational" which really say nothing substantive, since they were once at different times, both loved and supported by the US government which considered them as our friends-in arms when they acted as proxies for US geopolitical policies that wanted to weaken the regimes of our perceived enemies. OBL originally gained his fame (and many friends in the U.S.) fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, but once the USSR withdrew he turned his attention to fighting all "enemies of Islam," namely Israel and any non-muslim influences in the Middle East.

During the first Gulf War, Saudi Arabia allowed U.S. troops to use bases on its soil. OBL was outraged and condemned the U.S. and the Saudi government. In his mind, allowing "infidel invaders" to conduct a war against another Muslim country from the Prophet's homeland was an affront to all Islam. His attacks against the U.S. embassies in Africa, the USS Cole and the first World Trade Center bombing were seen as a direct response to the U.S. presence in Saudi Arabia.

Although the U.S. led Gulf War is seen as the "spark" that set him off, OBL's hatred of the U.S. goes far beyond the troop presence. To him, the U.S. embodies everything that threatens his vision of a "pure" Islamic state...religious freedom, democracy and cultural diversity as well as materialism and debauchery. It is no accident that he targeted the World Trade Center twice. To OBL, it stood as the embodiment of Western greed and banality.

The U.S.'s mistake was not necessarily supporting him during the Cold War, but underestimating him afterwards. The U.S. has shown some competency dealing with political soldiers, but has been challenged by fanatics and fanaticism.

The whole "sins of our Fathers" issue is one fit for halls of political debate and, hopefully, will make us more circumspect about our choices of allies today. But OBL has shown himself to be an enemy of the U.S. and of the Western concept of progress. So long as we assert our right to exist as free-thinking, non-muslims, he is a threat and must be treated as such.

The middle east has always had enormous strategic importance, we've played the Arabs off of each other during WW1, WW2, and the cold war (so did our allies and opponents) however after we no longer needed them we never bothered to keep promises made in the heat of battle (neither did our enemies but they weren't in power anymore). And so the sins of the fathers are passed on to the children, it's a sticky situation without a clearcut solution.
