This is from experience. The best way for him to learn is by listening. Sure it can be a pain at first, but by listening to a variety of music (especially to the songs he loves), it would stimulate his "appetite" to learn; it would also help train his ear as well, which is very paramount in learning guitar.
Subscribing to guitar magazines is a great way to learn techniques, scales, and all other sorts of neat stuff. The best mag I can suggest to try out is Guitar One magazine. They contain all sorts of tabs that your son can learn; as well as techniques he can use for soloing. It even comes with a CD-ROM containing the tabs in the magazine, only played so he can follow along as he reads.
Experimentation is also a good way to learn. As he plays on his own, he can discover unexpected things; from that experience he will eventually learn more through this.
With time, patience, and a lot of playing. Your son might be the next Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. Have fun!!!

there are sites all over with lessons, for them just google "guitar lessons", but don't force him. If he wants to play, he will gradually pick it up over time. Definately buy him a book showing all of the chords. They are the basis of playing. When he learns the chords he can play rythym with his favorite songs. Later on he will want to play some lead guitar, that is where web sites and some other types of materials will come in handy. They will show all the scales, modes, and the technical aspects of playing. Just get him the chord book, and let him grow as a musician on his own, and I'm sure if he wants to play, he will make himself learn, Just be sure to enjoy watching a kid with a guitar bloom into a musician, and get ready for any peace and quite at your home to cease.

Kudos for wanting to help your son. If you're starting from "square one", try this page, which has many lessons and links for beginning guitar players:
http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm
Once he gets a little farther along, Mark Hanson and Fred Sokolow have some terrific books/videos/CD's. That said, nothing beats the personal touch of private lessons.
Good luck to you and your son.
