I believe in good manners, opening doors for ladies, pulling out chairs, walking a lady to her door and generally having a chivalrous demeanor. Am I old fashioned or just in a minority?

Chivalry:
n. pl. chiv·al·ries
The medieval system, principles, and customs of knighthood.

The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.

courtesy towards women [syn: gallantry, politesse

That being said, I do believe in Chivalry. I try to practice it as often as I can. However, as the guy whos avatar is El Che, I do believe that if a woman doesn't treat you with respect, or is rude, then she probably doesn't deserve someone to be chivalrous either.

absolutely,

gentlemanly conduct is a noble character trait..

nothing wrong with bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women... IMO a little more chivalry and this world would be a better place..

On an aside, on a recent trip to Japan - my "chivalry" was very much a giggle and blush inducing anomoly.. holding doors open, offering to help, etc.. women were incredulous that a man would act in such a way - I was perceived as one heck of a gallant guy let me tell you!

It really depends on the woman. I think chivalrous behavior is warranted only when a woman behaves like a lady in the classical sense. Women who belch like the guys, curse like a sailor, behave like floozies, and have the mannerisms of a Neanderthal don’t deserve genteel behavior from men. Those who ask for it are promoting a double standard. If you want men to behave as in the days of old, you must behave in the traditional sense as well. A crude and abrasive woman, the type that are now the majority in this new feminist world, have no right to ask for men to behave in a chivalrous manner.

No, it was a system worked out by violent thugs who had nothing better to do when they weren't killing people. I believe in kindness and consideration to everyone without exception.
