I have a few ideas of things to help the victims of hurricane Katrina. I want to do something to help because I know that although all the publicity is gone from the tragedy, there are still thousands of homeless people. How can I get in touch with the Red Cross or someone who can help me set this up?

I don't have a definate answer to your question, but you may have better luck petitioning your idea towards something on a smaller scale than Red Cross...say a church or some other organization along that line.

I was affected by Katrina since I'm from south Mississippi. I was lucky that I didn't lose anything but what I had in my freezer, but I still had to evacuate and couldn't come home for 3 weeks. I have family in Memphis so that is where I went. While I was there, I found that there were several locations that were run by the Red Cross helping evacuess and they were asking for volunteers. Since I was essentially an evacuee myself, I felt compelled to volunteer and help as much as I could. I don't have anything against Red Cross personally, they were great and were doing wonderful things, but they were very close minded to assistance from other organizations. It was their ideas and ways or no way at all...even when it came to donations. There were people at the shelter that lost everything, I spoke with them and let them cry on my shoulder. The particular shelter I helped at didn't have much in the ways of clothing donations, so I took it upon myself to ask some family and friends if they'd donate clothes. When I brought the clothes back with me, they would only take things that had tags on them...it didn't matter how nice the clothing was. It just really got under my skin because most of the people there only had what clothes they had on, and I just felt that in a situation like that you shouldn't be so picky over a tag. It could have just been the Red Cross in Memphis, they may not all be like that, but it just got under my skin. Sorry, small rant over!

Every government in the world is obligated to help its citizens after natural disasters. This is something every normal government in the world understands. The assholes in the White House, though, don't.

I would first check with your local United way. I'm sure they already have structures in place in your town as well.
