Because you like dealing with the long hours, insolent students, ungrateful parents, impossible administrators, people who think you only work six hours a day, and low pay. You prefer it to the respect and higher pay that come with other jobs for which your intellect clearly qualifies you.

Can you tell I'm from a family of teachers?

Because as u already know, teaching is a very rewarding job. There's nothing more uplifting to know that you have been part of somebody's success whether they acknowledges it or not. I've been a teacher for three years myself and it felt so good hearing from my students what they were doing and what they have done. They were not stingy on expressing how grateful they were for the contributions I had to their success. You should watch the movie 'The Ron Clark's Story' if u haven't done so. Very simple plot and story line but will answer your doubts.

It's a profession that's in demand all over the country. Any town you'd want to live in will probably have an opening for a teacher.

I am a computer game programmer. Only a few places where I can be a full time salaried employee doing that -- and increasingly I find myself unable to live where I am now due to increases in the cost of housing.

Because the children today really need someone to look up to. I never really had an "influential" teacher and it saddens me. I hear people in their 30's & 40's recall names of their favorite teachers and see they really did make an impact. The children of the "future" need good teachers now more then ever. If it's the money issue, become a sub. I bet it is a way funner job anyway. Your not there 24/7 and you can screw around and still make a difference.

teachers are respectable people of knowledge and to give it up would be to join the rest of the slobs in the world that do nothing to promote intelligence, they were the only ones that bothered to do anything as far as my welfare when i was little besides family n all
