Are they a scurge on the country, our taxes and the landscape, or does anyone (that isn't one of them) actually think they're a good thing? And does anyone know what they do all day, and why they like their way of life?

I'm not trying to rant or incite any hatred. I just want an honest sampling of what people think.

Variety is the spice of life - it may be a cliche but as a society we need difference and variety to keep the balance and equilibrium. So, all different groups of people whoever they are should be treated with respect. There are plenty of other people about whom you might ask 'what do they do all day' or 'what do they contribute'? Why pick on travellers? Value and respect all people.

Do you mean Gypsies or Travellers? In my eyes they are completely different. Gypsies are the ones, I feel, that make the place look untidy and ruin our landscape. We had some by where i used to work and they made a right mess, they would sit outside their caravans and skin rabbits for the laugh! They were violent and thieves! Luckily I worked for Bailiff's and after a week of 'We have rights' they were picked up and carted off!

Travellers I feel, however, move around alot more and don't live in caravans (why not get a house!) they have horses and a cart. They are from an Irish background and are not at all thieving or violent.

I maybe just be sounding a little naive but that's my view.

They are people like anyone else. Unfortunately, as with the wider society, they have their criminals and bad elements. But they also have a great respect for their own people and are very family oriented. In the UK one of the more recent problems with travellers has been the huge influx from Southern Ireland where very strict new laws were passed which restricted their ability to set up illegal campsites. This included the impounding of vehicles and caravans and their destruction. Faced with this they moved to mainland England in their thousands where they have (quite aggressively) displaced many English travellers from their sites, legal and illegal. The Irish government warned the British government at the time and suggested they too might want to introduce similar laws to prevent such a migration but unfortunately nothing was done. To avoid ever employing the worst of them (they seem to be involved in every trade now) always seek personal recommendations from friends or contact the local Trading Standards office before even phoning someone for a quote. To some we are merely "Gorgers" (non Gypsies) and are their to be taken advantage of.

I believe in live & let live but there seems to have been a lot of bad publicity about Travellers recently.
I have no problem with them setting up sites in disused areas but I do object to the fact that they never clear up after themselves.
In the Aberdeen area these past few months there have been several instances where they have broken into private areas, lived there for several weeks then left, leaving old caravans, scrap cars, old tyres, mattresses, furniture, human excrement, dog mess & all sorts all over the place.
I pay my council tax for the council to keep the place tidy but am still expected to do my part.
These travellers contribute nothing but expect others to tidy up after them. There are sites especially set aside for them with toilets, washing facilites, rubbish collections etc, but they do not seem to want to use them.

I used to work for the benefits office. Travellers were allowed to claim what they like and screw the system over, as if you denied a claim they would beat the do-do out of you.

I live in a seaside town. When they pitch up here sexual assults go up, thefts increase, vandalism increases and old people are too scared to leave their homes.

Last time they came here the local 'mafia' had enough and told them so in no uncertain terms. It's the only language they understand.

The only people who like them are themselves, they leave filth and rubbish behind them when they pull off from their illegal campsites,These campsites are usually council (public) owned
parks and recreation areas, for the length of time they are there,no one can use these areas, when they have gone then ythe clean up begins, rubbish, unwanted scrap metal, excretia etc. all of this at the expense of council tax payers. As to what they do all day, they cadge or steal scrap metal and anything lying about. They like their way of life because they have no responsibility and don't have to pay their way

I can only say on what I have found, and I have found them to be very ANTI everyone else that is NOT a TRAVELLER.

Unlike the ORIGINAL GENUINE GIPSY, who you rarely saw, and who would leave a site as if they never was there....these are not!

I am not actually against people doing their own thing, providing it does not effect me or my own. However, a parasite type of existence here, the rubbish and total disrespect for society and law, actually makes me dislike intensely, and I don't like that in myself, but hey! Who said you have to LIKE & tollerate everyone.

Do I like them?

No. Although I've only had experience of a small number of them. And lets be honest, the media (daily mail) are always looking to exaggerate problems to provoke a reaction from you. It's how they make money. News is secondary.

Are they people, deserving of a basic level of respect and freedom?

Yes.

I dont think they do alot, but cheat their way through their life.
I have unfortunately met a few, and they are a waste of space, always looking for a way to get money.
False allegations is a good one. Lies.
