It borrowed heavily from the idea of Beauty and the Beast - except, in this case, the beast had no redeeming features. It was a big ugly end level monster the lived in this huge teleporting "castle" and appeared and disappeared at random across the globe.
Prince Colwyn (duh, why'd they name him after a Welsh seaside resort I'll never know) was destined to kill it and Rescue His One True Love - but he needed the help of a bunch of friends, including actors such as Todd Carty (Grange Hill, Tucker's Luck, EastEnders, The Bill) and Freddie Jones (everything, and now Emmerdale).
Krull had to collect a Glaive, which was this five - pointed smart throwing star sort of thing. He faced trials, including Doppelgangers sent by the Beast, which made "stuck pig" sounds when they were killed.
There was a Cyclops, of a race that knew when and how they were doomed to die; Freddie Jones' character gave his life helping the hero find out where the castle was due to appear next, by visiting this hideous spider woman in her lair of webbing; and in otder to get to the castle, they had to find these horses whose hooves sparked flame, and which could fly.
Did they get to the castle in time? Does the Prince rescue his One True Love? Take a wild guess. But you'll like the film nonetheless, even if the SFX are even more dated than on Hawk the Slayer (a movie that always gets confused with this film and Ladyhawke, for some reason ;) ...).
On second thoughts, to keep the suspense I've blown out of the water, close your eyes and try and block out every word I've just said from the word "borrowed".
Enjoy.

Krull, yes I recall a cyclops...a flying star that was used as a weapon....a variation of the Force from Star Wars...I also remember that a group of people were trying to escape from some sort of lair....but a couple of them got caught in this trap...the walls starting coming in on them....spikes and all.
I think there was a giant spider in there somewhere as well...

Not bad watch out for a young Ray Winston and a very young Todd Carty. Pretty good, but ending is a bit boring and long winded.
Liked the spider's web scene and a pretty scary one in the marshes, but as I love horses, the fire mares were a great idea.... enjoy a light film to be enjoyed best on wet Sunday afternoons!

The Beast kidnapps Lyssa before the ceremony is complete and Colwyn raises an army *Torquil, Rell, Ergo, Tich, Oswyn, Menno, Rhun- Robbie Coltraine* Bardolph, Keegan-played by an incredibly young Liam Neeson!-the Emerald Seer among others* to find the Black Fortress and rescue Lyssa

This movie was the perfect hybrid of Star Wars and Excalibur. Cool flick, in its own right. More of a sentimental film in regards to its comparison to my other movies. I remember from a kid that signature shot where Corwin is swinging on the rope over a horde of laser-shooting Slayers. Great acting on the part of Freddy Jones. But overall, this movie's production design is a little generic, but it serves as a worthy additon to any sci-fi/fantasy movie collector.

One of my fave films !!!!!!!!
sword & sourcery 1980's style !!!
Points to what for
- Todd Carty (Eastenders / The Bill) as one of the rebels
- The scene where some people are in a cravass with spikes closing in (it is so bad they have to hold them!!!)
- Bernard Bresslaw as the Cyclops (and the bit where he dies)
- The Fire Mares
- Some over acting - "THE - BLACK - FORTRESS - WILL - APPEAR - AT - DAWN -TOMORROW....."
- Some VERY Dodgey 1980's speical effects
It's a great film - also check out Willow, Ladyhawke & Hawk the Slayer

The actor who played the hero also played the Maquis character Eddington in Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Unlike that, the effects were dodgy and the acting even more so...

I remember very vividly that a guy gets crushed by a door. There is a huge spider and a cyclops that can only see his own death. I was too young when I first saw that movie.
