I am looking to buy a new steel string acoustic guitar and want the best I can buy in a $400 to $600 budget. Buying used is no problem. I went to Guitar Center and tried a Parkwood $499 (mahogany back and sides, spruce top) which was ok but not as playable as some of the cheaper Yamahas I tried but sounded fuller. I have fat short fingers and playability is a big concern.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure where you live, but don't think that GC is the only place to go. In your price range, Takamine makes a very good guitar, and you might even be able to get a lower end used Taylor in that range or maybe slightly more. Taylors are among the most "playable" guitars out there...they're incredibly well set up and sound very good. Epiphone (Gibson's 'budget' line) has a "Master Built" acoustic model that is right in your price range. They're enjoying a resurgence of sorts recently:

Just try every guitar you can, and let your ear and fingers be your guide. Don't let others tell you what you should buy, because you're going to be the one to play it.

First, I wish people would read. He's looking for an ACOUSTIC guitar... not an electric.

Look at the Ovation CS257 Celebrity Deluxe Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitars here. I've got one similar to this and it's delightful.

It's got a round back which projects the sound differently than your regular ol' flat top box. Plus, it's got a built in tuner! Which is always handy.

Ovation has been around since the '60's and they make quality instruments.

I've been playing for about 7 years and currently own a Gibson Les Paul Studio, a Fender Telecaster and one of these. This was my #1 choice (other than a $1500 Taylor) as an acoustic guitar.

I have a Dean guitar, electric acoustic, and I have very short fingers too, I bought this guitar about 2 years ago and it is an awesome guitar, the frets have the right distance in between for my fingers the series is Performer E GN. Someone in a music store recommended me that particular model because of my short hands and fingers and it has worked great, back then I paid 299 for it, it was on sale, the retail price was 375, but I am planning on keeping this one for a long time, the quality is great! and not to mention how comfortable the body of the guitar is. You might want to look at them and give them a try. Good luck and rock and roll!!!!

Try an Ovation. Guitar Center sells them, although you can 1) talk them down in price, and 2) try them out, and then go buy the same one online much cheaper.

Ovation guitars are considered one of the best acoustic and/or acoustic/electric guitars ever made. There are many models in the 400+ to 500+ range.

Either a Gibson or a Fender. It's really a personal choice you have to go and try them out. What type of sound are you looking for and you have to like the feel. I have had both and I perfer the Fender because of the feel of it the sound is nice but, to be honest I do like the Gibson Epiphone sound a little better.
