I hear this question a lot from moms complaining they are "overdue". I know pregnancy seems to take forever.

Because months are longer than 4 weeks. 7 days x 4 weeks is 28 days. This is the length of the average menstrual cycle and it takes ten of those to have a baby.

HOWEVER, the only month to have 28 days in it is February. Most months have 30 days, some 31. So if you add up all those extra days here and there, the pregnancy term is around 9 months, not 10. And term is between 38-42 weeks gestation so if you went an extra two weeks you are more near a 10 month gestation. But nobody goes 2 weeks over nowadays, every I know gets induced long before.

I would say, back in pioneer days, pregnancy was counted in months. Then people realized months are not set on a Sunday to Saturday or 28 day month. Those extra days add up (the 30 and 31 of each month). Except February of course, which is exactly 4 weeks, except leap year. Weeks are just more accurate. I hope this makes sense when read.

This can be applied to a woman's monthly cycle as well. Not monthly but every 28 days.

Yes you are right it is 40 weeks which works out to be 10 lunar months. Also when you and your doctor are trying to figure out your due date they go from the first day of your last period not the day you think you actually conceived. This will usually add 2 weeks to how far along you are.
For example I am due on Feb 14th which makes me 14 weeks, but my baby's actually age is 84 days or 12 weeks. I know this because I get updates from a web site called Pregnancy Weekly.

It's about 38-40 weeks for a baby.

That's 9 months as there are 13 weeks in every 3 months.

Your math is flawed as you've only accounted for 4 weeks in every month and if you look at a calendar you will see that's not correct.

Technically a full term baby is 36 weeks. Even though they go from the date of your last menstruation period, the actual length of pregnancy is 36 weeks, 9 months.

well because technically a women is only pregnant for 9 and a half months because they go from the first day of your last period. it is hard to determine the exact date that the baby was conceived on.

A month is slightly more than 4 weeks. 4 weeks is 28 days. One month is usually 31 days. Need I say more?

months do not have 28 days except February.
January has 31
February 28
March 31
April 30
May 31
June 30
July 31
August 31
September 30

So if you got pregnant on January 1, then October 1 would be 274 days which is 39 + weeks.
