Simply put, the watershed is the land regions that water uses to collect and drain. Also called the drainage basin.

Rivers and lakes are parts of the North American watershed.

I am kind of lost in the question. A watershed usually is an ecosystem where water, typically from rivers and streams, drain into the same body of water, of some sort. I really dont know what "ecological concept" you are talking about. I mean everything in the watershed must use the same body of water therefore tying all of the organisms together in the ecosystem.
