There's a lot of difference between the two.
The main difference is that DVD writers can write on CDRs (including rewritables) and DVDRs (including rewritables). In contrast, a CDR can't. Because it can only write on CDRs/CDRWs
So bottom line, a DVDR (DVD writers) are more beneficial.

Ordinary CDs are the one which are capable of storing the data size upto 640Mega bytes, in which you can write songs, mp3, vcd( dat files ) and documents but the size is limited, but DVDs are the one which can store the data upto 4.7 giga bytes. But similar to CDs they can store all the mp3, doc, and VCD data and high resolution movies.
But for making the movies you need some softwares that comes along with the DVD writer at free of cost.
DVD are the ones being used by everyone now.

I would go with a DVD Writer, you can burn any file the CD Writer can, the big difference is that a DVD Blank Disc is alot bigger in size. 4 gigs- DVD to 700mb - CD... Big Difference, I use both at the same time... DVD is Better by far

a cd writer will burn almost everything that you have listed, it uses normal cd's, if you intend to burn dvd size files then you are best with a dvd writer.
normal cd's will become obsolete in a few years time, so get a dvd writer, it can burn dvd and normal cd disks, so future proofs your machine, plus they dont cost that much more these days

I would opt for the DVD writer. It can write both Music and Data cds and Movies and Data DVDs. And it is not much more expensive than an CD burner (most new desktops >$500 come with one installed anyways)

There the same thing exept that CD writers write on CD and DVD writers write on DVD. Combo DVD/CD writers exist and they are very common. CD are cheaper but can't hold as much as DVD. Yes you can write anything on a DVD just as you can write on a CD.

DVD does everything CD does, but it also does DVD. CD only burns onto CD. The types of storage don't vary. You can still store the same things on both.
