Indian - a native of India or born there. Just like American, Estonian, Canadian etc....

A Hindu - is a person practising Hinduism. He/She need not necessarily be born in India but, this is a big but............MOST people coming from India are Hindus.

There are many religions in India, Hindus are the majority. Just like, America has many religions but a vast majority of them Christians.

Absolutely. Indian refers to a person living in the political division called India. Hindu is one of the religions in India.
Do not, even for a moment, assume that Hinduism has been the religion in India for ever. In the Indus civilization (about B.C. 4000 - 2000), no temples have been found. It is possible that they worshipped nature (including animals and including the fictitious unicorn.) Around the 2nd century A.D. Jainism and Buddhism were more widely prevalent in South India. In every part of India Hindus worship local gods that are not mentioned in the Hindu scriptures.
I hope religious fanaticism never gets a stronghold in India.

Indian is definetly different from hindu. An indian is an native of india if taken litterally. if u consider it in an more pronounced way it means that an indian is a patriot or stands for the nation. he is void of any religion and considers all other indians as brothers. but an hindu is an person who practises hinduism as his religion and may or may not consider other religions as equals.

An indian may be a muslim, christian, jainist, sikh, or other minor religions which along with hinduism are accepted in india
