If your getting ANY type of popups it can be either spyware or virus related.
Excellent spyware removal is AdawareSE
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Excellent anti virus program works behind what Nortan misses is AVG Free Edition ------ Yes you can have 2 antivirus software on same PC. Just dont use Nortan or any other virus programs with built in firewalls (ex McAfee)
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php
Both are FREE and work.
Preventive maintenance will be to use a Internet Explorer browser ex: Yahoo or Google Toolbar, Mozilla etc to keep the pop ups from occuring.
Trend Micro HouseCall is a free online based scan that scans and removed spyware, viruses and alerts if you have windows security issues.

I am a professional developer with Microsoft, and have about 10 years of experience in the field of Computer Engineering. Most problems with PC's are the result of malicious software that infected a Computer. Examples of this are things such as malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, root kits, and worms. In other cases, they are the result of stability issues due to crashes, freezes, or Hardware Issues. Some examples of hardware issues could be a dirty cooling fan causing the computer to overheat, or low memory due to lack of RAM, which could cause the PC to run slowly. You may think it could be a virus, or malware, or registry issues, but it could be something else entirely. As a computer layman, one may find it hard to really ascertain what exactly is causing the problems, without having a professional do an in depth analysis of your PC.
As professional computer repairs can be quite costly, I would recommend to you a Software that many of us in the tech department here at Microsoft use personally and professionally to diagnose and repair computer problems very quickly. It is a software called Reimage, from https://reimagefix.im .. In my personal experience, and in the experience of many of my associates, this is probably the best software ever created for those experiencing computer troubles. This is likely to remedy just about ANY problem your computer could possibly be having, and have it running like new. Reimage has won several awards, and been featured in publications such as PC Mag.

There are at least 3 different infections that cause those phony spyware ads. All have different cures. Does it perhaps advertise "Raze Antispyware"?
Are they full pop-ups or a small balloon coming from your from down by the clock?
Do the popups say "Messenger Service" any where on the title bar?
What is the product it is trying to sell you?
Please edit your question with more information.

Ok, you must have browsed a site. . .which planted spyware on your PC.
DOnt worry it is fixable. . .i was there a few months ago. First of all download a copy of "Hijack this" http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
& also get ur hands on Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/
then, reboot in safe mode. Run S&D, delete the Unwanted Registery keys,
then run Hijack this. & see if there is any BHO's that u dont approve. delete those. this should help restore it back to normal.
P.S Windows Defender sux, AG Grissoft Free version is full of Adware, . .it didnt catch the things Spybot S&D caught.

Music forces you to eat more. According to a work by the journal Psychology and Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage someone to take time over your meal, so you consume more meals. So, switch off – silence is likely to make you more aware of what you’re adding your mouth.
