You cant get it to pass if there's something seriously wrong unless it's fixed. Take it to a repair shop and have them check it out. Also after the inspection they should tell you why the car failed the inspection. So if it's something minor - get it fixed, if it is major problem that would cost $$$ to fix that means it is dangerous to drive as well. I assume you wouldn't want your son to get hurt.
From my personal experience, when there's a major problem with an engine - either get a new engine or another car.
Good luck!

I'd make sure the car gets tuned up. A new set of plugs, wires, change the oil, tune the carburetor if it is equipped with one, and also get a can of engine cleaner and just wipe down anything you can reach that's overly greasy. Have him find a book at the library for the model of car he has--this will be a good learning experience for him and if he can do it right, he'll save himself a LOT of money by doing these easy things by himself.
I wish I had more information on how to deal with emission tests--I live in Wisconsin and our cars aren't smog-tested except near Milwaukee.

First of all, it's not YOUR responsibility to get HIS car to pass. If he's old enough to have a car, he's old enough to take the responsibility for the car.
That being said, your question doesn't say what kind of engine inspection he needs to pass. If it's smog, you need to figure out why it won't pass. In general, you are best off if you have a fresh tank of gas, and the car should be very warm, i.e. you should drive it for 1/2 hour before you smog it.
More info would help!

You will have to be more specific as to the problem. What kind of car is it? Is the check engine light on? Is all the smog equipment there? We will need to know WHY it didn't pass. Otherwise it's like asking how high is up?

If it is not passing engine emissions, the problem could be any of a list longer than your arm.
Is it burning oil from worn rings or leaking valve seals?
Is it missing on any of the cylinders causing bad emissions?
Is it in need of replacement sensor so that emissions come out right?
Your question does not provide adequate information to give an intelligible answer. Your best bet is to see a mechanic, since it is unlikely that you will be able to fix it yourself anyway.
best of luck

Change the oil and make sure the engine is warm when he gets there. Go to the Auto Store and they have an additive to help it pass. Did they tell you what was wrong?????
