Actually Pygmallion was the sculptor, not the sculpture, and he fell in love with a statue that he had created.

Pygmalion was a sculptor who created a female sculpture (Galatea). He fell in love with her and during one of the festivals, asked the Gods to help him bring her to life. She lived and breathed and Pygmalion and she married and procreated.
There are many more modern takes on the Pygmalion tale. For example, My Fair Lady and Mannequin etc.

Ovid's mention of Paphos suggests he was drawing on the brief account of Pygmalion and Galatea in Bibliotheke, a Hellenistic encyclopedia of myth formerly attributed to Apollodorus. The story has parallels in the example of Daedalus, who uses quicksilver to install a voice in his statues; and of Hephaestus who creates automata for his workshop, Talos, an artificial man of bronze, and, according to Hesiod, Pandora— from clay, at the behest of Zeus.
Pygmalion was the sculptor who fell in love with his sculpture.
Between the Lions an PBS has a great skit on this! :)
