the brain will be damaged after 3 - 4 minutes without oxygen, under normally conditions. however there have been cases when people have been out of icy water after a while and are not breathing, they have been brought round very slowly with no brain damage, these however very unusual circumstances.

Hard to say for certain....

It is generally accepted that brain damage wil be likely if the brain is starved of oxygen for more than 2 minutes.

However, serious brain damage can occur with much less time. And others have been 'oxygen starved' for longer with - seemingly - little effect.

So it has to then come down to what you mean by the brain 'starting to die'. Brain cells die for all kinds of reasons. Smoking cigarettes is a good one... as is consuming alcohol. So itf you smoke and drink alcohol, your brain is dying anyway. ...

oh - then I look at my desk and see that glass of cider.... oooo 'eck!

Roughly 4 minutes from circulation ceasing but much depends on the temperature of the body. There has been a resuscitation after 30 minutes under very cold water which had rapidly cooled the body.

No not 2 minutes.....at 3 1/2-4 minutes cells start to die, and by 5-7 minutes irreversible brain damage starts to set in. By 8 minutes....unless you're one of those crazy pros, you're gone.
