A 1990 Blazer transmission is still a hydraulic unit with no electronics for shifting, therefore no corrolation between the 2.
Are you sure the transfer case is not in 4 low??? This will cause the tranny to shift thru the ranges really fast and feel like normal first gear. If your sure the T/Case is not in 4 low, then a few things to check.....
1. The detent Cable at the throttle Body, if it became unhooked, the trans will go to max. line pressure and not shift unless you really push/rev the motor.

2. The governer valve....It is driven by a plastic gear which often wears out or breaks. If the gear is no good, there will be little to no governer pressuse. Without governer pressure, NO upshift !!!
Hope this helps

Don't know much about trannys, but I can confirm that there is no correlation between the wheel hub and the tranny problem.
