He should have a ultrasound done and they will see if it slipped in or fell out. I have the Mirena too and I know when they thought they lost it for me they did a ultrasound. Sometimes the strips will play tricks don't worry it will all be okay. GOODLUCK

It can slip into the uterus or get out of place but the nonpregnant uterus is small so it won't get "lost". I have a nurse friend at work who has this same problem just now only she was spotting and cramping as well.
Have you ever seen a wall anchor they use to hang screws in drywall. It's a T shape and it folds up into an I shape for insertion, once inside opens up. Sorry for the weird analogy - but the Mirena IUD is similar!
Strings are supposed to hang out so you can check it is placed correctly and for removal. If they are not seen, they could have slipped inside or gone inside entirely. You doctor should have answered these questions for you - if he didn't get a new doctor. IUDs can cause serious problems if something goes wrong, they need monitoring and you need information so you can make decisions about your fertility!
It's a great method for women who have already had one or more children and waiting to decide if they want to have more later. It's not a great method for those who have not yet had a child, someone with multiple partners or a history of PID. I would not recommend for anyone with those problems.

Its okay, its not lost in there. He might have to dialate your cervix and use tongs to pull it out, but it wont require surgery.
More than likely he will be able to remove it without dialation or much probing.
Usually they just move a little out of place and they have to look for them a little more actively before finding them.
There is no place for the IUD to go except where it is, and it doesnt require surgery to remove it. the uterus is not a hollow area unless you're pregnant, so the walls of the uterus tend to hold IUD's in place, since they touch eachother. Its the same concept as wearing a tampon, it cant get lost, you just have to search for it to remove it some times.
It'll be okay.

If your doctor didn't answer these questions for you, then you need a new doctor.

If they can't find it, they might have to surgically remove it.
