I saw Steve Vai 4 times with David Lee Roth, pretty good Player, did all of Van Halens solo's no problem......

Eddie is a great player, but Vai is more of a "technique" sort of guy...heck Vai played with Zappa. For pop/rock it's Eddie...for more experimental stuff, it's Vai.

I say Steve Vai is better. I'd say they both can play anything, but I think Vai is more creative and imaginative. Actually now that I think of it, I'd say Vai can play better too.

Though I must say Hot for Teacher had one of the best solos I have ever heard.

Eddie was better overall but Steve has some more "flavor" in his playing (think Yankee Rose intro for example).
